Guess I should get this out of the way before I start forgetting details.
This is the first event I entered of this calibre with a deck that IS one of the top decks of the time. Previously, it has been some fun thing or some underdog idea I've been wanting to play, but now that I actually possess it (thanks in part to picking up stuff when they were cheap *coughDantesfor25cough*), I went in with Burning Abyss. Second in the running, FYI, was Batteryman (with Monarch side thanks to mained TMSF).
I actually managed to get a good amount of sleep this time around. Most of the time, I'd be staying up, organizing my binders or doing more deck changes. I opted out of that early on, probably because I didn't really need to trade for anything much that day, or probably because a few hours before I dozed off, the family went out for a big dinner at the Mandarin I work at for a belated birthday celebration for my dad. Either way, I liked sleeping so much it seemed that I almost ran it late. At least, later than I wanted. That's because I wanted to anticipate the drive considering the other passengers I'm picking up who are in different parts of the city, before we head on out to a place about an hour away... normally. Traffic wasn't too bad, parking wasn't either, but the small things added up and this is what I tried to plan for by trying to leave early. It is to be noted that I tried to get at least one more guy out, so I waited a bit for any additional passengers, which delayed our leave.
Enough about that morning though, we made it barely in time, and I was scrambling to still write down my deck. In my haste, and possibly fearing lack of time, I didn't dig out some other things I wanted to change in the deck, which weren't much, but who knows how much better it might've been? Notably, they were some Extra Deck choices, and the main MAIN deck one was Soul Charge over The Traveler and the Burning Abyss. Turns out I typically sided out Traveler so I can't really say that it was that much of a problem. On to the matches then!
Round 1) Frognarchs
Joel Pogels - Table 16
Game 1 saw me running into two Gorz two turns in a row, with Fire Lake clearing both out on consecutive turns thanks to TGU setting up my first turn, and Dante recycling that Fire Lake. I eventually pushed enough damage through via gaining so much advantage and momentum.
Game 2 was less memorable in specifics, but this is where Majesty's Fiend started to shine. It would seem it was a sign of things to come... anyways, the opponent didn't mind losing to that at all, seeing as it's his favourite "Monarch"/card.
1-0
Round 2) Qliphort
Ralph Manahan - Table 7
Qlips I didn't have as much time playtesting against, and I was already being tested early.
Game 1 had me barely hanging on, but a crucial misplay ended it for me. With Vanity's Emptiness up, I couldn't do much but wall with Rubic's sturdy 2100 DEF, staving off the 2100 ATK Qliphorts, at least for the time being. The mistake was setting Graff, only to realize it popped Rubic, and Graff was pointless with Emptiness still up. Sigh.
Game 2 I set my MST, which I was hesitant to do. I was immediately punished with an MST. He got some things going and soon it was my turn again. With that MST gone, I had nothing to stop the Skill Drain that stopped Guide, and I lose soon after.
1-1
Round 3) Qliphort
(Forgot to get name or Table number)
Eager to make up for the fails in the last match, I was more focused. That said, my inexperience in the matchup still showed up, but I was doing better this time, I think.
Game 1, he mained Towers, and I tried my best to keep surviving until I drew into some form of an out, which I sadly didn't. This ate up a lot of time though...
Game 2 I did better. Slowed him down enough to prevent him from gaining much momentum, and soon we went into time. I eventually eked out the win, so this was a draw. Definitely an improvement over the last match at the least.
1-1-1
Round 4) Chaos Shaddoll
Jeffrey Lin - Table 61
First Shaddolls of the day. Wasn't a bad player or anything, though he seemed to lack confidence, often turning to a friend or something of that capacity that was somehow seated next to him (not for advice of course. Jokingly judge called to say "Judge, he's playing Burning Abyss!!"
Can't remember the game specifics, but at the final game (dunno if G2 or 3), he topdecked his only Eclipse Wyvern target, which I realized when he used Wyvern to fuse for Construct but banished nothing (allowing me to confirm there was no choice to banish anything from the deck). That happened mid/late game so there were too many DARKs already in the graveyard. I made Virgil using Calcab and Rubic, forcing him to decide to activate El Shaddoll Fusion (which was picked up before via PoD) now or never, with two monsters on the board and only the DAD in hand. He didn't of course, since that'd make it easier for Virgil to clear that new Fusion out (took out the current one anyways). I eventually followed up with more summons and finished him off. He dropped though, which hurt my tiebreakers. [Why would ragda care about tiebreakers? He usually doesn't do well in these things... well this time he's got Burning Abyss, so who knows?)
2-1-1
Round 5) Satellarknight
Tyler Jones - Table 38
This fellow may have been quiet, but he was audibly frustrated (read: salty) for a majority of the match. Also thought things didn't always work as he intended...
Game 1 with my Dante (Cir is the only Material) on board, I MST one of his two face-downs. He thinks about it, then chains the second card first, CED, targeting Dante. With the intent to stop Cir (he said out loud), he then chains the targeted face-down, Vanity's Emptiness. I then let him know that's not going to stop Cir, and showed the first bit of frustration I was to see a lot this match. Upon losing that game, he was very sore about it when he said "You win..." in a very not amused tone.
Game 2 had him start with minimal monsters, which turns out to be Honest. I get some plays going, but because of his Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror, I had to change some of the ways I played. Good thing I typically side into Monarchs for this reason, to minimize the impact of the opponent's sides against Burning Abyss specifically. Anyways, by the time he did get Mirror up, I had Downerd Magician already, and thanks to Mirror, she never shrunk from the 2500 ATK. I also clarify to him that Shadow doesn't act like Skill Drain, so she can still pierce and gain attack, while also mentioning in-hand DARK monsters aren't negated either. He had to bring his Honest back with Call of the Haunted just to keep up defenses until he finally gets to draw cards. He uses Pot of Duality into a second Mirror, I also saw he had Alpha in the opening hand as his hand was tilted towards me, so I played accordingly. He eventually drew into Reinforcement of the Army to get Deneb. He eventually Soul Charges to make Delteros and pop Downerd, and this is where things get bad for him.
I first make a Virgil with only Special Summons, but opted to not use its effect due to my knowledge of his Alpha, and I don't want his effect to go off as well as Alpha netting him a card. Instead, I SS'd another Malebranche so I can Tribute it for Vanity's Fiend! I then crashed Virgil into Delteros and he lacked a response, so I drew from Virgil and he got nothing. Eventually gets an Altair but is just there as a chump blocker and for Alpha, setting a card behind him. I drew Trap Stun and set it, opting for patience. His turn he just switched Altair to DEF and passed. I drew Allure of Darkness, activated the Stun to which he may have gotten something off first, but it didn't really change much for him. I then Allure'd into Puppet Plant and The Monarchs Stormforth, while banishing a Cir, leaving me with a Majesty's Fiend in hand. Either card would've worked, and he only had so little LP at this point, so it was a matter of preference on how I won, but all the same I beat him. He wasn't too happy about losing the match anyways, but at least he didn't drop.
3-1-1
Round 6) Shabyss
David Bui - Table 23
Supposedly he had Burning Abyss cards too, but for the most part, I was playing against Shaddoll.
Game 1 I had a good thing going with Fire Lake, and eventually it was my board of Dante and Virgil against his empty board and at this time it was his turn. He went into Shekhinaga, which is a good out to Virgil should I get him back, but the Rock Star had concerts to go to, so he asked Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning to cover for him (read: topdeck'd). Just summoned BLS, ran over Shekh then his last LP was ripe for the taking. Drew Majesty's that turn too, so alternatively I could've tributed Dante for it, then BLS attacked then Majesty's for the finish, but there was no point for that.
Game 2, it seemed that my blind MST hit a second Sinister Shadow Games that helped me minimize his impact, and I soon won, thanks to Fiends being such bosses. This match victory was very invigorating, though the conversation around that area was still how I sacked with BLS. "Dude, I just lost to a topdeck'd BLS"
4-1-1
At this point, a couple of my teammates that came via their own way decided to call it a day, seeing as they both agreed to go early if they both dropped, which they both did by this point. Before they did though, one of them noted I was still X-1-1 and it dawned on me that I had a good chance of topping *knock on wood*.
Round 7) Mermails
Hunter Knight - Table 14
Yes you read that right. Mermails, at X-1-1, Round 7. I naively answered his question of "are you playing meta" to which I said yes, so he opted to go first when he won the dice roll. Ehhh....
Got smashed in Game 1 over time, but Game 2 Majesty's Fiend says hi, backed up by Trap Stun x2 and MST as my opening. He drew into more and more monsters, with his minimal backrow not as threatening with my set up, getting attacks through if he didn't set any monster. Last turn of that game, I went with Trap Stun first, then I Normal Summoned a Tour Guide From the Underworld besides my Majesty's when he had 3200 LP and 1 monster. His perplexed reaction quickly changed to one of loss when Raigeki says "let's go to Game 3".
That game eventually went into time, but I had the LP lead. He eventually scooped it up since I can probably get the last bit of LP he had left, or at least keep him from getting at mine.
5-1-1 (!)
By this point, I'm guaranteed a top. [excites internally] Getting Top 8 would be cool though for that Virgil mat...
Round 8) Burning Abyss
Raymond Chow - Table 9
Ah, the mirror match, finally. Though with my past experience, I generally do fine in these. Then again, I do remember a bunch of those times was due to them drawing poorly or I drew nuts, so I can't really say how it would've been if we were on "even" ground.
He drew poorly Game 1, however, to the point I won before really seeing any cards. With all the backrow I saw, I put in the Trap Stuns alongside my Monarch conversion side like usual.
Game 2 he did manage better. When he got going though, he forgot to use a Graff he detached, which would've given him Virgil or another Rank 3. When he realized, I noted that I saw that and wasn't keen on giving him a shot because he passed on an optional effect to activate another Dante. Eventually he had 3 Dantes up that put some hurt while I was slowed down by Flying "C". Majesty's Fiend eventually got me out of that jam, but Dante's DEF was pretty beefy. A second Majesty's Fiend came down to put my Dante in the graveyard so I can finally summon BLS, who eventually broke the deadlock. Our backrows were hilariously all just Trap Stuns at the end of it.
6-1-1 (!!!)
Standings for Top 8 were announced, and there was only one player with 19 points that made it in... and it wasn't me. Some of the folks I faced dropped or didn't do as well, so the tiebreakers put me at the bottom of the 19 pointers (there were only 3 of us). Doing the math, that means I was in 10th place, out of 241!
My last opponent also later claimed that if he won, he probably could've come in 8th because one of his tiebreakers was the fellow in third place. Eh oh well. I may have missed out on the Virgil mat, but
WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Finally, the drought has ended. I've had teammates top before I did, but I can finally say I did it. Though it's sobering to note that, as some teammates have mentioned, that because I did NOT play something rogue, I actually did well, which was a compliment to me in general as well as a jab at my casual side. Eh, no matter, not many things can downplay this result. Speaking of which, here's the deck that got me here!
Burning Abyss (40 Cards):
Monsters (21):
3 Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss

I also got a few cards primarily for other ppl who couldn't make it there, though I finally got some on my personal want list like RP2 Appropriate because you can interpret it to net you two cards upon initial activation (unlike before). When we finally hit up food, it was very refreshing as everyone was famished.
It was the first Regionals for two buddies of mine, so they had a blast despite less than favourable results at the end of the day. They did get a lot of the cards they wanted, so that was a plus too. Overall, a great day, I was happy I wasn't late, heh!
