If no one's taking advantage of the fanfiction section, I'll just post some of my old stories to get it started. It's by no mans great, but if people find it an enjoyable read I'll keep posting it, and maybe even finish it.
Chapter I
A New Era Dawns
‘’ Once, in a long, long time ago, there was a time. A time, which had survived many difficulties. The biggest being of that time, humanity, had suffered great losses too. Not only had they lost countless lives, countless homes, countless irreplaceable items, and countless loved ones.
They had also lost the very thing that has kept humans alive for days without water, weeks without food, months without help, years without company, centuries without peace, and millennia without progress.
They had lost hope.
This happened during the aftermath of the ‘It‘. ‘It’ is something that happened almost exactly 5 millennia ago. Some theories say 3 millennia, but they haven’t been proven. But not disproved either. What it was, not one scroll, article, or even stone carving or hieroglyph has been told. Not one living person or item on this earth knows what did happen on the day of ‘It‘. At least, not one that can tell of it.
It is generally assumed, that ‘It’ was either of 2 possibilities. Number one, which was the most common, was that there had been some sort of explosion so powerful, that it caused countless humans to die. A following nuclear winter or so killing even more.
The second possibility was that some sort of virus started spreading at rapid speed, killing people at light speed. But were this correct, this virus would also have had to cause bone to degenerate quickly. Because this would be the only possibility of there being no traces of them at all.
Well, technically there were 3 possibilities, but one of them was a combination of the two just mentioned. That some sort of explosion caused many people to die, and then entered the water supply, killing the victims. And then, if it wasn’t bad enough, the nuclear winter got rid of most remaining humans.
Today, scientists have estimated, that humans went from a population around 6 billion humans, to just 3 billion in a matter of a few years. And after that, it dropped to 1 billion, probably because of the theoretical nuclear winter, and then dropped to an astonishing 250.000 humans.
But those calculations weren’t considered that accurate, since not many bodies were found to look at, and test. It was more like an estimation based on some tests, which were only a very small part of the humans that lived back then. The only thing we knew was that humans drastically fell in numbers around 2 times.
Humans back then had built up humanity, and everything we have today. Not only did they suffer great historical losses, like artifacts and paintings. They had just as great physical losses. We lost most of the scientific data. What survived, were mostly badly damaged books in nuclear storage areas. This had caused a suspicion that maybe people knew that ‘It’ was going to happen. But some places did survive, unharmed, anything inside being intact.
Or they were just cautious, and apparently for the right reasons.
The result of this was that humans today are a few millennia back in schedule, when talking about technological evolution. Actually, a few drawings and pictures survived from ‘It’. Those that were in good enough shape to be able to somewhat see what was on them, resemble most things in today’s society. So it is said, that humanity today, is exactly as it was before ‘It’ happened. But, again, there is not proof of this.
And why am I telling you all this? What does it have to do with why you are here? I have frequently been asked these questions, and the answer is, everything. The very reason you are here is because of all this.
As said much has been lost, but not that many years ago, around a century ago, a building was found. A great building. What the KC on it stood for we don’t know, but we do have a suspicion that it has something to do with one of the founders of this game, a man called Seto Kaiba. Mostly believed to be a legend, but that can yet not be proven.
The best guess is that it stands for Kaiba Corporation, or that it’s read wrongly and is supposed to be CK, which could be an alternative spelling for his name, that being Ceto Kaiba, with a C instead of an S.
What I am saying, is that in this building scientists have found big stack of documents about a certain game. A game called Magic and Wizards, better known today as Duelmonsters. It was here that we got all the information on this game, which you all are here to study and to become masters at. And also all the information on every single card in existence at the time. Not many cards are made that aren’t from the originals.’’
A bell rang.
‘’ Ah, I see that class is over. Thank you all for being quiet, and listening. You can all go now. ‘’ Mr. Heimo, our teacher in this class, said. He was a good guy. Polite, and generally a nice guy. You just had to watch out though not to get into an argument with him on something he liked. That discussion would never end. He was very enthusiastic man on anything he put his mind to, one of them being history.
He could spend hours on history. Students frequently asked him to consider ending the class, since they had been in class for half an hour too long. Or, these were all things I had head heard of him.
I, Wolfram Raywin Neri, stood up, preparing to leave. This was the first time I had heard this speech. It was a very well known one. Or so the other duelists said, who had been here more than a year. A long talk about how duel monsters came back to life. I put on my jacket, which I always took off when I was studying or listening to someone teach.
I don’t know why I do that. It’s just something I’m used to. I just let the jacket hang on my shoulders. Maybe it’s some image I like, and I’ve subconsciously developed over the years of my life. I put on my Daedalus Blue jacket and went out of the large, bright class room. Almost formed like a hi-technological dome.
White metal walls, the seats for students elevated, step for step. Somewhat like stair steps with tables on them. And every few meters some stairs. A fun thought: Stairs on stairs.
I was first out since I had the closest seat to the door. I liked to be able to get out fast for whatever reason it had to be. Either because a boring class was over or because I got some idea for a something, which I couldn’t let be for a moment too long.
This was one of the first mentioned days. The boring ones. I was out in a matter of seconds.
I walked through the long red-carpeted halls, with white-light brown walls. I am pretty sure that they were of some sort of rock. I walked through several halls, up a stairway or two, back through a few halls, and finally I was at my room. I opened the door to get in. Now I felt like being at home. Well, almost. It’s as they say: North, South, East, West, Home is always the best.
The walls were black, with blue flames on them. The flames formed many different shapes and items. Some easy to see, some harder to spot. The bed was of dark brown tree, with black sheets. The edges on it were blue.
The desk’s legs were of the same dark brown tree as the bed. The legs supported a glass table, which had a lamp, some books, and a computer on it. It was state of the art. Actually, the whole room was. But somehow all this didn't satisfy me. Those things were all materialistic, and all things that reflected the egoistic nature I had. On one hand I needed it, on the other hand it showed my reliance on it.
I sat down, almost fell, onto the bed. I covered my face in my hands. I hated these times, when I was in these bad moods and had no homework to work them away with. My thoughts always started straying, wondering about the most unnecessary thing. Things that you needn’t know. And things you wanted to forget.
I started thinking about how it was at home.
‘’ Wolfram dear, it’s time for breakfast. And tell your brother to come too. ‘’ My mother said.
‘’ I will, mother. ‘’ I was already up. Had been working on perfecting my deck, as I did every time I needed it. I went out into the hall, walls of dark tree covered in pictures. All ancestors of mine. The floor was covered by a red carpet.
I knocked on my brother’s door, lightly. I knew he was up. I think he had some sort of device telling him when I was up, because he always got up just at the same time as me. After that I went straight to the kitchen, where a delicious meal was waiting for me.
My parents, my brother and I were all at the table. As usual dad was reading the stock market. He wasn’t really interested in anything on it. He only wanted to compare his very successful business Firm to those of others.
It was the greatest of the Duelmonsters companies, which was the reason he wanted me to be a duelist. But not just a duelist, the best duelist. I could just see his mind thinking of the marketing value of the leading seller of it having the world's greatest duelist for a son. He was clearly more enthusiastic about it than me. If it were up to me, I’d be a writer. Or a scientist, and write as a hobby.
But no, the only writing I got to do was reports about tournaments I won, one at a time.
‘’ So, sons, today is the day you two go the duel academy. I expect only the best of you two. As you two know, losing because you didn’t have the right cards does not count anymore. I have custom made every single card in both of your decks, and if there should come anything new and interesting, send me a mail and I’ll get you the card you need. And…’’
He could go on like that for hours, when he was at his best. Well, worst really, in my opinion. Only my brother actually listened to him. I had memorized everything he said, and tried to see how accurately I could predict what he said. Sometimes I was only words beside a perfect match.
We were at the qualification-dome. A great dome-shaped building made just for dueling; I was starting to notice a pattern. One of the buildings that survived ‘It’, although I'm not so sure how much of the original was left. After I registered, I entered. My brother, who was a more active person than me, ran in and soon got lost somewhere. To think we grew up in the same household...
I just wanted to get this over with so I could actually get some excitement for once. Duel some people who actually had skill. Since I had been dueling at this semi-pro level, I had not lost a duel. I wanted that to stop right after I beat this proctor. I wanted competition.
I sat down in one of the chairs. This house was formed like a coliseum. Some rings in the middle, where proctors, and possible students, dueled for entry. Around them, the seats got higher and high up, until they got to an almost balcony-like form.
I was leaning against the railing and looked at the duelists. I heard names be called here and there, and people walking in after being called. ‘’ Jógvan…Liv…Chris…Solveig…Johan…Nicolaj…’’ And more came afterward. Very international, but that was to be expected at this level.
A girl suddenly stood beside me. I tried to get to see how she looked without turning my head too much. As I would have expected, she looked like a preppy. She was wearing a yellow shirt, with a pink, fluffy vest over it.
Her hair was blonde and very long. It went all the way down her back, all the way down to…I stopped myself in my thoughts and looked away again. I hadn’t noticed that I had almost really turned to see her. No need to stand out quite yet. You have better things to think about, I said to myself. You have better things to think about, than a girls…Hair! Relax...
I took a deep breath. I could hear her giggle. Apparently, she had noticed me.
‘’ Did’ya see anything ya liked? ‘’ She said, happily. I was glad she hadn’t taken it badly.
There was a small laugh in my breath as I sighed, and without thinking about it I lifted my hand to scratch my head. ’’ Maybe. ‘’ I said with a smile. ‘’ Sorry to have been so rude. ‘’ Now in a serious voice. ‘’ It shall not happen again. ‘’ Well, one thing I liked that dad had taught me, was discipline. The things you simply don’t do. And I had just broken one of them.
‘’ Don’t think about it, ya? ‘’ She said, and winked. Why was she being so friendly? I’d hardly met her, and she was already acting like we’re going out together. Why wasn’t she the least bit ashamed?
‘’ I’ll keep that in mind. ‘’ I could hear a name be called, and she reacted to it.
‘’ Well, gotta’ go. I’ll see ya. ‘’ She started running down the stair but suddenly stopped. ‘’ Oh wait, I forgot to ask ya for ya name. ‘’
‘’ Don’t worry about that. You’ll find out when my duel will be announced, even if you don't hear the name. ‘’ She heard what I said but didn’t really seem to understand.
‘’ I will, I guess… ‘’ She said, as she turned and ran down for her duel.
‘’ Let’s hope so, ‘’ I said, leaning on the railing again. ‘’ Cecilia… ‘’
