Hi there I was playing on DN, this happens: The guy has a 1200 ATK monster and attacks into my face down Heraldic Beast Basilisk. He takes 200 damage... but can he activate fiendish chain to negate the destructive effect of my Heraldic Beast Basilisk? Heraldic Beast Basilisk: After damage calculation: Destroy any opponent's monster that battles this card.yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Heraldic_Beast_BasiliskFiendish Chain: Activate this card by targeting 1 Effect Monster on the field; its effects are negated, also it cannot attack. When it is destroyed, destroy this card.yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Fiendish_Chain

A monster gets flipped up during the start of the Damage Step (or else how can you compare stats for Damage Calculation?)
Being that it's the Damage Step, Fiendish Chain cannot be activated here.
P.S. Thank you for posting card text!

I have a follow up for that then, cause I'm just not thinking right.
Wouldn't Basilisk's effect activate in grave? Or is that supposed to be on field?

After Damage Calculation is not yet the end of the Damage Step, which is when monsters destroyed by battle finally hit the graveyard.

In this case, my monster survived. Basilisk has 1400 DEF as his monster had 1200 ATK. He wanted to use, I was pretty sure that he couldn't... but couldn't find something to make me 100% sure... and if I'm not 100% sure, there is always the chance of me being wrong. Damage calculation is still on damage step... but Fiendish Chain does negate something... PS - Radga... thank you for telling me to do the obvious thing. Always learning

Hey! My name is ra... oh yeah, you like to mess with me like that, I remember now! Fiendish Chain does negate something, but the kind of negation cards allowed in the Damage Step are those that need to respond directly to particular cards/effects, typically negating activation as well, not just the effect.
