Simple enough question, want to hear your thoughts.

I find stuff that has good synergy with what i'm bulding and get better ideas from some people if I have something that shouldn't be there.

Once I have decided on my theme/archetype and include the staples of that deck (for example: If I am building Lightsworn; Judgment Dragon and the best lightsworns such as lumina, lyla, wulf, ryko, etc and charge/rehcarge) I then evaluate what generic S/T staples, personal techs and meta calls can fill out the build. For example: I feel any deck that has the space should be playing 2-3 Maxx "C' due to it's versatility and usefulness versus the best deck of the format right now; it is also extremely splashable.

Honestly, I always consider what I am facing before I build. Perhaps it's just being Meta-centric, but I always consider the Meta before any build, fun or otherwise.

I'm an aggressive player. I try to balance that out by making my decks more control oriented.

I usually start with a skeleton..then tweak it according to the meta.
I do prefer countering Meta though.

Am I the only one who picks what they WANT to run/ enjoy running, then building to accommodate that in the current game state?
I usually just pick card/combo/archetype X and then figure out how to "fit that" into a reliable deck chassis that operates well regardless if I get my "fun card/combo/archetype" to work like I want, and run that. Tweaking all the way to iron out consistency issues and issues with how engines fit together.
but I'm more of a "casual"/ non meta player, even if I want my decks meta comparable and at that level.

I enjoy what I choose to run and enjoy building the deck in current game state.I also pick a card or archtype , try to fit it in deck thats reliable regardless if i get the combo off or not.I will either tweak it or ask someone for help. I'm more of a casual player then meta player too.I enjoy deck building and luv the chalenges jerk jerk would do.

Like don't get me wrong, I can build by assessing the meta, choosing a appropriate archetype that's competitive in that meta, and teching it out after testing and assessing it's match-ups so that it ends off unique but solid....I just happen to prefer picking what I want my "ideal" play/ card/ monsters" to be and working out from there. Those challenges sound fun.I'll probably have a hand in making them (and if not I can join them ).

We could start up those kinds of contests here. I'll see what I can do in the coming days for that.

I usually start with a card or small set of cards to work around and then go from there. One of the more recent ones was V Salamander had too good of an effect not to try and build a deck for it. Another was trying to find a good use of Mist Bird Clausolas.

Deck building doesn't really have one guideline for me. I think in general, I follow the game and the upcoming product and start testing/creating beta lists ASAP. I like to be ahead of everyone in every aspect that I can, and this helps in being more prepared for the match-ups as well. And then there is the slow time where formats begin to drag and I start looking at individual cards for gimmick/project decks. I really like this aspect of game since I feel it helps to keep one's mind always thinking in a more fluid, and untethered, manner.
